Senior Campus

At Xavier College, we educate students from 3-year old Kindergarten all the way through to their Year 12 Valete celebrations. We have three campuses: Kostka Hall in Brighton, Burke Hall in Kew and Senior Campus, also in Kew.

At our Senior Campus, we educate students from Years 9 to 12 (Senior Years), also providing them with the opportunity to board. The Senior Campus supports approximately 990 students at its Kew location. Collectively, Xavier College enrols over 2000 students every year.

Xavier College first opened on Barkers Road in 1878 and to this day enlightens generations of fine young men. Home to the iconic Xavier Memorial Chapel, the Senior Campus is a culmination of modern innovation and rich historical preservation.

In the years since the foundation stone was first laid in 1872, the Xavier College grounds have continued to be upgraded and refined. More recently, the Senior Campus constructed the Eldon Hogan Performing Arts Centre, a state-of-the-art facility for the Arts.

  • Curriculum

Our aim is excellence in education and the formation of reflective, compassionate and articulate men and women of Christian faith, hope and love who will provide outstanding service and leadership in our world.

All Jesuit schools across the globe, including Xavier College, base their pedagogy and educational structures on the Ignatian Pedagogical Paradigm (IPP). This model underpins what we do and why. It connects us globally to a unique model of thinking and learning that defines us as not only as a spiritual community, but also as a community of learners. It is based on the Spiritual Exercises of Ignatius of Loyola and takes a deeply holistic view of our world.

It is not a method of teaching specifically, but an approach to teaching and learning that is deeply contemplative and is centred on relationships. The IPP is based on five principles: Context, Experience, Reflection, Action and Evaluation. It serves to provide the student with an understanding of humanity, their own place within that and an authentic desire to be of service.

At the Senior Campus of Xavier College, we challenge the students to have the courage to ‘do what we say’. This means to act in a way that is faithful to the ethos of our school, our tradition and our story.

In Years 9 and 10, an extensive range of course options enable students to tailor their studies according to their emerging interests and talents. The curriculum is designed to increase students’ understanding of the disciplines they are considering for the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE), so that they can make fully informed choices moving into their final years.

In Years 11 and 12, students can choose from a wide range of courses to complete their VCE. Vocational Education and Training (VET) units and some university studies are also offered. Xavier College’s excellent academic results at the VCE level reflect the school’s commitment to excellence both in teaching standards and expectations of students.

With assistance from the Careers Education program, all Xavier College students acquire by their final year not only a sound knowledge of specific subject disciplines, but a realistic appreciation of their individual interests and intellectual capabilities.

  • Co-Curriculum

Alongside traditional curriculum offerings, broad opportunities exist for the education of the whole person, which is central to a Jesuit education.

Some of the programs we provide at our Senior Campus include public speaking competitions, Pastoral programs, debating competitions, music concerts and recitals, dance classes, outdoor education programs and drama productions with neighbouring schools.

Becoming “Men and Women for others” is an integral part of the Xavier College curriculum. The Ignatian Service program has all Middle and Senior Years students partake in community service placement throughout their education. Students care for their community in aged care facilities, specialist schools and in organisations such as Sacred Heart Mission, St Mary’s House of Welcome and Friday Night School.
