The Senior Campus

The Senior Campus is located in Barkers Road, Kew, some eight kilometres from the centre of Melbourne.

The Senior Campus caters for students between Years 9-12. Of the 980 students, 76 are boarders.

Care of individual students is given a high priority at the Senior Campus. Students are divided into ten Houses, with an integral aspect of the House system being Tutor groups. On entry to Year 9, each student is assigned a tutor who oversees not only the academic progress of that boy for the final four years of his secondary education, but also his well-being and sense of belonging. A chaplain is appointed to each Year level.

Broad opportunities exist at the Senior Campus for the education of the whole person, which is central to a Jesuit education. These opportunities include:

• Ignatian service programs
• Public speaking competitions
• Artists and writers-in-residence.
• Peer leadership through Pastoral programs
• Inter-school and House debating
• Drama productions with neighbouring schools
• Musical soirées, concerts and recitals
• Dancing classes
• A challenging outdoor education program
• Student magazine production
• Retreats and Reflection days.

The diverse activities available to students across Years 9-12 complement the extensive and enriching curricular and co-curricular programs. Technology is very prominent in the broad and stimulating curriculum, and students use their personal laptop computer in class and for academic work beyond the classroom in Years 10, 11 and 12.

Three important features of the Senior Campus are the Memorial Chapel, the Stephenson Centre and the Eldon Hogan Performing Arts Centre. These facilities greatly enhance the life of the Senior Campus.

• The Chapel was initiated as a memorial to the Old Xaverians who died for their country in the First World War. Delays during the 1920s and then the Great Depression meant that construction of the Memorial was not completed until 1934.

• Opened in 1993, the Stephenson Centre is a sports centre used for Xavier’s Physical Education classes and sporting teams.

• Made possible by the generosity of the Estate of Eldon Hogan, The Eldon Hogan Performing Arts Centre is a state-of-the-art theatre complex which opened in 2008. It is used by Xavier’s Drama and Music departments and can also be booked by the general public.
