| Thank
you very much for your interest in Xavier
College.
Our
school began in 1878 and has, therefore,
been part of the Australian educational
scene for a very long time. It belongs,
moreover, to a worldwide network of Jesuit
schools whose origins lie in the vision
formulated by St Ignatius Loyola four-and-a-half
centuries ago.
What
are some of the features of that vision?
In the first place, a Jesuit school attempts
to inspire its students to find an attractive
human role model in Jesus Christ. It tries
to encourage them to imitate Jesus particularly
in his willingness to serve other people
generously and enthusiastically. It hopes
that they will live their lives creatively
and joyfully within the Catholic Church
tradition.
Secondly,
schools like Xavier College want to challenge
their students to aim for the highest possible
level of achievement in all areas of school
life: spiritual, cultural and sporting.
This pursuit of excellence, of course, is
the product of the individual student's
talents and abilities and does not demand
the same outcome from all its scholars.

Thirdly, Xavier College encourages academic achievement,
not merely through the challenge of formal examinations
but also in the development of intellectual curiosity.
We hope that our students will question and search,
explore and discover. We wish them to become self
motivated learners who view with critical eyes
the society in which they live. We are very proud
of them when they join the sense of service of
others, already mentioned, with this creative
and challenging spirit of curiosity. This process,
we trust, will allow them to contribute to the
growth of a more just, peaceful and forgiving
society.
Of
course, we are not always as successful as we
would like to be in realising our aims. For that
reason, we are delighted that you, prospective
parents and students, are showing interest in
becoming part of the school community for we are
seeking not passive spectators of the educational
process but active participants who will help
us bring our vision closer and closer to realisation.
May
God travel with you always.
Yours
sincerely,
Christopher
McCabe
Principal
