XAVIER COLLEGE - EARLY YEARS CENTRES & PREP to YEAR 4

  Early Years Centre | Burke Hall | Kostka Hall | Senior Campus | Buxton Outdoor Ed Centre

In early 2000 it was announced that Xavier would open an Early Years Centre on the Burke Hall campus in Studley Park Road from February 2002.

St Louis House, a state-of-the-art facility for kindergarten and early primary years children, was built on the site of the former Henry Pride Hospital site and caters for boys and girls from 3-year-old through to Year 4. (Xavier remains a boys-only school from Years 5 - 12.)

In February 2004 a similar co-educational Centre opened at the Kostka Hall campus in South Road, Brighton. Currently this Centre runs from 3-year-old to Year 3 but will become fully operational in 2010 when it runs through to Year 4 for the first time.

Children bring to their years of early education their whole body. They learn with their eyes, ears, hands, nose, heart and mind. Each action of their day is a multi-sensory learning experience and the teacher is the “agent provocateur” who engages, stimulates, encourages, probes and opens the doors of life to the young learner, fostering growth and building self-esteem.

The curriculum of both Centres is firmly based on the Early Years Programme of the International Baccalaureate, with the added influence of the Reggio Emilia philosophy. Literacy, including music literacy and computer literacy, is a key component of education at St Louis House. In the early years, the pastoral ethos and attitude adopted by the staff are based on the Ignatian tradition wedded to a Marian focus.

Included in the primary years is the preparation of the children for the Sacraments.

Teachers and assistants employed as early educators at Xavier College respect the innate capacity of young learners, see children as rich contributors to society and value a child’s perspective. Procedures have been put in place with partner schools so that post early primary education for girls is assured once they leave Xavier.

ENROLMENT POLICY
- EARLY YEARS CENTRE

Criteria for Selection:

The College strives to seek a degree of balance and flexibility when assessing the applications of children of Old Xaverians, siblings of current families and families new to Xavier.

Priority is given to children who:

  • are baptised Catholics and who are the sons/daughters of parents actively involved in a parish community;
  • are siblings of students currently attending the College, provided that normal enrolment procedures have been followed (see below) and that there is evidence of active support of the school's ethos;
  • are sons and/or daughters of Old Xaverians, and girls who have close familial connections with Xavier College;

As well, the College will do all it can to accommodate

  • children whose parents have indicated that their child will remain at Xavier until Year 4 (girls) or beyond (boys);
  • applicants or siblings currently attending other Jesuit schools;

Other criteria for selection are:

  1. The date of application will be taken into account when determining entry.
  2. Children must be 3 years of age before 1 February to commence at 3 year-old level.
  3. Xavier College seeks to achieve a ratio of no more than two thirds of each gender in each group.
  4. Children, new to Xavier, entering the EYC as 4 year-olds must be 4 years of age at the time of their entry.
  5. Once a student is accepted in EYC at either Burke Hall or Kostka Hall, loyalty to that campus is required. Siblings subsequently enrolled are expected to attend the campus the current sibling is attending.
  6. The number of children moving from the 4 year-old group into Prep will determine the availability of new places available at the Prep level.
  7. Boys moving from Year 4 to Year 5 will be required to undertake the Year 4 Assessment Process along with all new students for the following year.
  8. Applicants must meet the academic requirements established for each entry level by the Principal and endorsed by the College Council.
  9. Parents must be willing to support the nature and ethos of the College and to accept its policies and rules established for the well-being of the children.
  10. Following interview, the College reserves the right to take into account the College's ability to serve the educational needs of each child.
