At
the beginning of March 2000, Xavier College
announced an exciting new development in
the education programmes it offers: a co-educational
Early Years Centre and Prep Year
4 would open at the Burke Hall campus from
February 2002.
As the then Chairman of the School Council,
Mr Barry OCallaghan, stated at the
time, the new facility was a response to
the many requests being made by Catholic
families for a Xavier College education
from the early years.
A new, state-of-the-art building was constructed
on the former Henry Pride Hospital site
and St Louis House welcomed its first children
in February 2002.
Miss Bernadette Williams is the inaugural
Co-ordinator and a team of teachers and
assistants has been appointed to
assist her. St Louis House caters for children
in 3 and 4 year old kindergarten, and Year
1 and will extend to Year 4 in 2006
Children
bring to their years of early education
their whole body. They learn with their
eyes, ears, hands, nose, heart
and mind. Each action of their day is a
multi-sensory learning experience and the
teacher is the agent provocateur
who engages, stimulates, encourages, probes
and opens the doors of life to the young
learner, fostering growth and
building self-esteem.

St Louis House is light-filled to nurture the
spirit of enquiry. With windows at appropriate
levels for children, the layout is flexible to
encourage the development of changed perspectives
and the building, through its design, makes the
natural links between play, learning and respect
for self and the surrounding environment. The
atelier, the playground, the kitchen, as well
as the traditional classroom, are all key components
of the instructional environment of St Louis House.
At different times, children are involved with
whole class groups, smaller work groups or engaged
in individual pursuits.
The curriculum is firmly based on the Early Years
Programme of the International Baccalaureate,
with the added influence of the Reggio Emilia
philosophy. Literacy, including music literacy
and computer literacy, is a key component of education
at St Louis House. In the early years, the pastoral
ethos and attitude adopted by the staff are based
on the Ignatian tradition wedded to a Marian focus.
Included in the primary years is the preparation
of the children for the Sacraments.
Teachers and assistants employed as early educators
at Xavier College respect the innate capacity
of young learners, see children as rich contributors
to society and value a childs perspective.
Procedures have been put in place with partner
schools so that post early primary education for
girls is assured once they leave Xavier.
ENROLMENT POLICY -
EARLY YEARS CENTRE AT BURKE HALL
Criteria
for Selection:
The
College strives to seek a degree of balance
and flexibility when assessing the applications
of children of Old Xaverians, siblings of
current families and families new to Xavier.
Priority
is given to children who are baptised Catholics
and the sons/daughters of parents actively
involved in a parish community.
As well, the College will do all it can
to accommodate :
- younger
siblings of students currently attending
the College, provided that normal enrolment
- procedures
have been followed and that there is evidence
of active support of the school's ethos;
- sons
and/or daughters of Old Xaverians, and
girls who have close familial connections
with Xavier College;
- children
whose parents have indicated that their
child will remain at Xavier until Year
4 (girls) or beyond (boys);
- applicants
currently attending other Jesuit schools.
